IVFSA Foundations of Forensics - The Silent Witness: Identifying and Documenting Signs of Animal Abu

About this event

Martha Smith-Blackmore, DVM, Forensic Veterinary Investigations, LLC

This one-hour introductory session is designed for veterinarians who wish to start enhancing their skills in recognizing and documenting suspected cases of animal cruelty. In this session, we will cover the essential role veterinarians play as advocates for animals experiencing non-accidental injury. Participants will gain an overview of how to conduct thorough clinical examinations and detailed documentation for suspected abuse cases.

Using real-life case studies and practical examples, attendees will learn to identify subtle signs of maltreatment, document findings effectively, and communicate with law enforcement and animal welfare agencies.

Given the broad scope of forensic veterinary science, this session will provide a foundational understanding and emphasize the critical importance of continued education in this field. Attendees will leave with an introductory toolkit and the confidence to start advocating effectively for animals. For those interested in a deeper dive, we encourage joining the International Veterinary Forensic Science Association (IVFSA) and participating in future continuing education opportunities to expand your expertise and involvement.
